Abstract
There is a prevailing idea that the news media and journalists actually increase political violence by the way in which they cover this news. The sources of this postulate, i.e. academic circles, political authorities and, on occasions, even some professional journalists themselves, give the role of the media criminal connotations, thereby increasing the limits placed upon the reporting of political violence. However, the real origin of the increase in political violence is often to be found within the political power itself. This article presents an analysis of the manipulation of the news coverage concerning ETA, a violent organisation, by the state-controlled press during Franco’s dictatorship, more specifically, the news reported in the Bilbao newspaper, “Hierro”, during the month of August,1968. In this manipulation the importance of the subversive organisation is exaggerated, its existence is publicised, the political reality is distorted and a state of alarm is provoked; all this with the aim of strengthening the authority of the political regime in power at that time. Despite the strict control to which the press was subjected, in which the observance of the regulations governing the reporting of news was closely supervised and the appearance of even the pacific opposition groups greatly limited, ETA enjoyed, in the press of the regime, a huge amount of publicity of a type which bordered on sensationalism.
