\nA finales de los a\u00f1os sesenta del siglo XX, ETA y el IRA Provisional iniciaron sendas campa\u00f1as terroristas que condicionaron la historia del Pa\u00eds Vasco y de Irlanda del Norte durante las siguientes d\u00e9cadas. Las causas que explican este estallido de violencia son m\u00faltiples. En el presente art\u00edculo resumimos los or\u00edgenes de ambas organizaciones y analizamos en profundidad uno de los factores m\u00e1s relevantes que los llevaron a matar: una visi\u00f3n retrospectiva cuajada de mitos que demandar\u00edan una deuda de sangre. No obstante, frente a visiones fatalistas, defendemos que el peso del pasado no predetermina la acci\u00f3n de los diferentes sujetos, sino que, dentro de un contexto determinado, aquellos tienen capacidad para escoger qu\u00e9 m\u00e9todos emplear para intervenir en pol\u00edtica.

\nAbstract<\/strong>
\nAt the end of the 1960s, ETA and the provisional IRA began their terrorist campaigns, which determined the history of the Basque Country and Northern Ireland during the following decades. There are multiple factors that explain this outburst of violence. In this article, we summarize the origins of both organizations and we analyze in depth one of the most relevant factors that brought them to kill: a retrospective view full of myths that demanded a debt of blood. However, opposed to fatalistic views, we sustain that the burden of the past does not predetermine the action of the different subjects, but, within a particular context, you choose your methods to intervene in politics..
