\nEste art\u00edculo ofrece la visi\u00f3n de un historiador sobre la cuesti\u00f3n vasca actual y analiza cr\u00edticamente la pol\u00edtica del PNV desde la firma del Pacto de Estella con el nacionalismo radical en septiembre de 1998. A su juicio, este viraje estrat\u00e9gico del PNV supone romper con su trayectoria hist\u00f3rica centenaria, cuyo mayor \u00e9xito pol\u00edtico ha sido el Estatuto de Gernika, y recaer en el error de Estella de 1931: su alianza con una fuerza violenta y antidemocr\u00e1tica (entonces el carlismo, hoy ETA y HB). Al igual que hizo en 1936, la direcci\u00f3n del PNV debe optar entre el dilema de democracia o fascismo. El PNV se encuentra en una encrucijada hist\u00f3rica: debe decidir entre la unidad de los dem\u00f3cratas o el frente nacionalista vasco, entre consolidar la Euskadi real de Gernika o so\u00f1ar con la Euskal Herria virtual de Estella. La construcci\u00f3n de esta \u00faltima s\u00f3lo es posible por medio de la dictadura abertzale y el terrorismo de ETA.

\nAbstract<\/strong>
\nThis article offers the view of a historian about the present Basque matter and it analyses critically the politics of the \u00abPNV\u00bb from the signing of the Estella\u2019s Pact with the radical nationalism in September 1998. In his opinion, this strategic switch of the PNV means to break with its centenary historical line whose greatest political success has been the Gernika\u2019s Statute and to relapse into the Estella\u2019s error in 1931: its alliance with a violent and undemocratic force (at that time the Carlism, nowadays \u00abETA\u00bb and \u00abHB\u00bb). The direction of the PNV must choose between the dilemma of democracy or fascism, just like it did in 1936. The PNV is put on a historical spot: it must decide between the democrats\u2019 unit or the Basque nationalist front, between consolidating the real Basque Country of Gernika or dreaning of the virtual \u00abEuskal Herria\u00bb of Estella. The construction of the latter is possible though the nationalist dictatorship and the terrorism of \u00abETA\u00bb.
