This was the first murder committed by ETA which had been planned beforehand. Six of them were condemned to death. The trial of Burgos unleashed a wave of protests against Franco\u2019s regime, and ETA gained much popularity. The declaration was made during the press conference that was celebrated in a villa in the south west of France, 29\/12\/1973. The masked man who was the only one standing was the translator. The pictures on the wall were all portraits of dead members of ETA. In September an explosion killed 13 people in cafeteria Rolando. This was the first indiscriminate attack carried out by the terrorist organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>The \u00ablaborist front\u00bb of ETA split to found the party LAIA, <em>Langile Abertzale Iraultzaileen Alderdia <\/em>(Party of the Patriotic Revolutionary Workers).<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>Another division led to two new branches: military ETA (ETAm) and political-military ETA (ETApm). AMB, Collection of <em>La Gaceta del Norte<\/em>.<\/center>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h1 style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>1975<\/h1>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In August the Spanish Government passed a severe Anti-Terrorist decree-law.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>Undercover agent, Mikel Lejarza (<em>Lobo<\/em>), made possible the practical dismantling of ETApm.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In September, at the end of the Francoist regime, the executions of the members of ETApm Juan Paredes, <em>Txiki<\/em>, and \u00c1ngel Otaegi unleashed a new wave of protests in Spain and abroad, especially in the Basque Country. As a consequence, Franco declared his last State of Exception.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>On the 20th of November, the dictator Francisco Franco died.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>Juan Carlos I became King.<\/p>\n<p><\/center>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;10&#8243;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;10170&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\nCover of <em>El Correo Espa\u00f1ol \u2013 El Pueblo Vasco<\/em>, 07\/10\/1975, on which the funeral for the three civil guards (Jes\u00fas Pascual Mart\u00edn, Esteban Maldonado and Juan Jos\u00e9 Moreno) was reported. All three were killed in an attack carried out by ETAm in O\u00f1ati.<\/center>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<a name=\"transicion_1976\"><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h1 style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>1976<\/h1>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In July the radical Basque nationalist forces published the \u00abKAS alternative\u00bb (<em>Koordinadora Abertzale Sozialista<\/em>, Patriotic Socialist Coordinator). <\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In the light of the political change in Spain and based on the plan of Eduardo Moreno Bergaretxe (<em>Pertur<\/em>), ETApm promoted the foundation of the party EIA, which would be part of the future list of candidates EE.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d><em>Pertur<\/em> disappeared in the French Basque Country before the 7th Assembly of ETApm took place. AMB, Collection of <em>La Gaceta del Norte<\/em>.<\/center>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h1 style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>1977<\/h1>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In May a pro-amnesty week ended with the death of several people in the Basque Country because of police repression.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>The Government of Adolfo Su\u00e1rez and ETApm hold conversations in Geneva which resulted in the banishment of the most important ETA prisoners in May.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>ETAm, EHAS, <em>Euskal Herriko Alderdi Sozialista<\/em> (Socialist Party of the Basque Country), and LAIA boycotted the general elections in June, which were the first democratic elections to be held after the Second Republic.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In September the newspaper <em>Egin<\/em> appeared, which took a radical Basque nationalist position.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In October the Spanish Parliament passed an Amnesty Law for all the terrorist prisoners. The two branches of ETA continued with their attacks.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>The so-called <em>bereziak<\/em> (special) commandos split from ETApm and joined ETAm. HB was closely associated with ETAm.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In September the Autonomous Anti-capitalist Commandos killed for the first time. The victim was the taxi driver Amancio Barreiro.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>A demonstration took place \u00abin support of a free and peaceful Basque Country\u00bb, which was organized by PNV, supported by political and union forces like PSE-PSOE, PCE-EPK, ORT, UGT and CCOO, and responded to by HB with a counter-march \u00abfor the <em>gudaris<\/em> of yesterday and today\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In December the Spanish Constitution was approved by a referendum.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In the same month para-police terrorists were responsible for the death of the leader of ETAm Jos\u00e9 Miguel Be\u00f1aran (<em>Argala<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In these years of the Transition, ETA blackmailed business owners by means of the so-called \u00abrevolutionary tax\u00bb or directly robbed them and others to finance the organization.<\/p>\n<p><\/center>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;10&#8243;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;10104&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\nDemonstration \u00abfor a free and peaceful Basque Country\u00bb. Only two MP\u2019s of HB were elected, in comparison to its five deputies in the Third Legislature (1986-1989).<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>Gesto por la Paz started a campaign of continuing protests to claim the liberation of the people kidnapped by ETA, who were Julio Iglesias Zamora, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Aldaia, Cosme Delclaux and Jos\u00e9 Antonio Ortega Lara. He was the third leader of ETA who got arrested within six months.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>The European Court of Human Rights ratified the sentence of 2003 which had illegalized <em>Batasuna<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/center>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;10&#8243;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h1 style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>2010<\/h1>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>The radical Basque nationalists presented the document <em>Zutik Euskal Herria<\/em> (Euskal Herria standing) in February, in which they abandoned the use of political violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>The French policeman Jean-Serge N\u00e9rin died in March in a confrontation with several members of ETA. It was the last murder committed by the terrorist organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In September ETA announced that it would no longer carry out \u201carmed actions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><\/center>[vc_empty_space height=&#8221;10&#8243;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;10192&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\nAct in the Basque Parliament in tribute to Jean-Serge N\u00e9rin, the first French police officer who was killed by ETA. Vitoria, 19\/02\/2010.<\/center>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h1 style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>2011<\/h1>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In January, ETA, which was weaker than ever, declared a \u00abpermanent, general and verifiable ceasefire\u00bb. <em>Sortu<\/em> (Be born or Create), the new brand of the radical Basque nationalist movement, presented its statutes in February, in which they abandoned the use of political violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In the municipal elections of May, after the illegalization of <em>Sortu<\/em>, the radical Basque nationalists presented themselves within the coalition <em>Bildu<\/em> (Join, together with EA and <em>Alternatiba<\/em>), which became the second political force in the Basque Country after PNV.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>In October <em>Lokarri<\/em> organized an International Peace Conference in San Sebasti\u00e1n, in which a declaration was presented to ETA calling for its \u00abdefinitive cessation of its armed activity\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\u201ctext-align: center;\u201d>On the 20th of October ETA proclaimed its \u00abpermanent ceasefire\u00bb, although not its dissolution neither the return of its weapons.
