\nLa violencia pol\u00edtica, en sus m\u00faltiples manifestaciones, ha condicionado las pr\u00e1cticas sociales y el imaginario de la sociedad vasca en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas. El inicio de este proceso se produce en pleno franquismo cuando el nacionalismo vasco experimenta una profunda mutaci\u00f3n que ha marcado la vida cotidiana y la estructura institucional de la sociedad vasca desde entonces. Hace ahora cuatro a\u00f1os, el 20 de octubre de 2011, Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA) anuncia el cese definitivo de la utilizaci\u00f3n de la violencia. Se han realizado numerosas investigaciones sobre el origen y la evoluci\u00f3n del nacionalismo vasco radical para entender los cambios que ha experimentado a lo largo del tiempo. En este art\u00edculo se analiza el proceso de expansi\u00f3n y declive de la actividad de ETA y de los apoyos sociales y pol\u00edticos con los que ha contado a lo largo de este tiempo. A partir de las investigaciones sobre el nacionalismo vasco realizadas por Alfonso P\u00e9rez-Agote a lo largo de tres d\u00e9cadas tratamos de completar su explicaci\u00f3n sobre la violencia pol\u00edtica prestando atenci\u00f3n a la movilizaci\u00f3n social en torno a ella. A partir de los resultados de varias investigaciones, y siguiendo una l\u00f3gica hist\u00f3rica que arranca en la dictadura franquista y culmina en la primera d\u00e9cada del siglo XXI, se analizan los mecanismos sociales (cognitivos, afectivos y pr\u00e1cticos) que han posibilitado su mantenimiento a lo largo del tiempo y su progresiva erosi\u00f3n. \nAbstract<\/strong>
\nThe political violence in its many manifestations, has deeply conditioned social practices and the Basque social imaginary in recent decades. The beginning of this process occurs during the Franco regime, when Basque nationalism underwent a profound mutation that marked daily life and the institutional structure of Basque society ever since. Four years ago, on October 20, 2011, Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA) announced a permanent cease-fire. There have been abundant researches on the origin and evolution of radical Basque nationalism to understand the changes that had been experienced over time. In this article the process of expansion and decline of ETA\u2019s activity and of its social and political supports are analyzed. Building on research carried out on Basque nationalism by Alfonso P\u00e9rez-Agote over three decades, we will attempt to complete his explanation of political violence paying attention to the social mobilization around it. Drawing on a series of research results, and following a historical logic that starts in the Franco\u2019s dictatorship and culminates in the first decade of the XXI century, the social (cognitive, affective and practical) mechanisms that enable its maintenance over time and its gradual erosion are explained.
